Character Spotlight: Adam-X / X-Treme!!!!
In honor of the release of the Point Break Remake trailer (see our review here!), let’s take it back to the 90’s…and let’s take it to the EXTREME!!!
…or more accurately, X-Treme!
Adam-X, the man known to owners of the Marvel Masterpieces trading cards as X-Treme, was a minor character in the X-Men universe. But one who the writers really really wanted to have huge impact on X-universe and the Marvel Universe as a whole. And while I think of Fabian Nicieza’s run on the X-Men fondly since this was the version of the X-Men that I grew up with in the 90’s…X-Treme was just a bad mashup 90’s comic book tropes – unnecessary armor (check!), random spikes/blades (check!), goatee (double check!), over the top power…coupled with ninja-like fighting ability (triple check! sidenote: his power was to ignite a person’s blood on fire once it was exposed to the air…so in addition to giant swords, he could light you on fire if he lightly nicked you), and let’s not forget the best design aspect – backwards baseball cap! (He’s basically Poochie from the Simpsons.)

Of course, when he was introduced to the Marvel Universe it was as an adversary to the most 90’s EXTREME characters of them all – X-Force. I feel like all of the problems with comics in the 90’s can be attributed to Rob Liefeld’s run on New Mutants / X-Force…but that’s a rant for another time. By the time Adam-X arrived, Marvel was just trying to keep up with the extremeness that was being produced by the Image guys. Now, Adam-X could have been a random and innocuous character in the Marvel Universe…but Nicieza decided to insert Mr. X-Treme into the most frustrating “mystery” in the books at the time – the Third Summers Brother. For a time during the 90’s, any character who had a mysterious past was a candidate for being the long lost brother of Cyclops and Havok. They would tease this out for some time…and then forget about the storyline…at least until the next mysterious character came up. It was a way to give a character some depth…without really doing anything at all. While comic books are all about teases and unresolved storylines (due to the constant rotation of creators)…this one was just ridiculous in (1) how invested readers were and (2) how often they employed it.
…but I digress.
Let’s get back to Adam-X with a quote from the Adam-X Fan Page:
“Adam-X is the only one who proves effective in doing anything to Juggernaut; he manages to ignite his blood, however, the downside is that Juggernaut, for fifteen minutes, burns anything he touches.”
Yes…in his efforts to be a hero, Adam-X turned the Juggernaut into an unstoppable ball of fire…that’s X-Treme!
Given all that, I’m rooting for a comeback. If Point Break can rise from the grave, why can’t Adam-X return and be the X-Treme hero that we’ve been…occasionally wondering about?
